Who is Prince Phillip? The Late Duke of Edinburgh

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, is also known as Philip Mountbatten and was the husband of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. The unfortunate Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark was his father. His mother was Princess Alice of Battenberg.

The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, passed away in April 2021. He left behind a fascinating and well-lived life. He is mainly known for his controversial statements from time to time, which put the monarchy in a difficult position. Everyone saw him as an outspoken person, sometimes a bit harsh. But what made him like this?

Prince Philip had a rough past. His family had to flee Greece when he was a child. His mother got admitted to a mental institution not long after he was 9. His father went on with his life afterwards. He had to live with his maternal relatives in Britain and Germany. That is where he learned about the world and how harsh it is. It made him more realistic and less caring for politics and his surroundings.

Active even in his golden age, he was a very active member of the British Royal Family. The most prolonged living royal spouse. He was constantly behind Queen Elizabeth II throughout his life. He was an avid, technologically advanced person and wanted the monarchy to embrace the new world. To commemorate his life, The Royal Mint unveiled a Five Pound limited edition coin. The Duke himself approved of the coin's design in 2008. The design perfectly captured the person who thrived in the shadows. Yet, he made so much effort throughout his life serving for the British Royal Family. He defined his role for himself. There was no one like him, serving as a Prince and the spouse of the Queen before. So he had to build himself as a person without having any role model.
